Level 1 Pile Inspection & Follow-Up – Tacoma, Washington

Marine infrastructure is constantly exposed to a challenging environment. Tides, vessel traffic, weather, and biological growth all contribute to gradual wear on docks and pilings. Routine inspection programs are essential for identifying issues early and ensuring that waterfront structures remain safe and operational.

The photos shown here are from a recent Level 1 pile inspection in Tacoma, conducted by Enviro-Tech Diving as a reassessment of previously documented pile damage. The purpose of the inspection was to determine whether the observed deterioration was ongoing or had stabilized since the previous evaluation.

Level 1 inspections consist of a visual and tactile examination performed by a commercial diver. During this process, divers systematically review the accessible portions of piles, checking for signs of deterioration such as:

  • Marine borer damage
  • Structural cracking or splitting
  • Abrasion from vessel contact
  • Loss of cross-section from biological or environmental degradation
  • Movement or misalignment

The diver documents findings directly to the surface team while conducting the inspection. This allows the project team to compare present conditions with previous records and determine whether structural changes are progressing or remaining stable.

In this case, the inspection provided the client with critical information for ongoing asset management and maintenance planning. Reassessment dives like this are an important part of responsible waterfront infrastructure management, allowing owners and operators to track the condition of their facilities over time and prioritize repairs when necessary.

Projects like this also highlight the value of having experienced dive teams capable of conducting inspections efficiently and safely while working in active marine environments.
